2009 February 28

As I sometimes like to mention, I work in a fancy restaurant that various celebrities, from A to Z-list, sporadically frequent.  Tonight, I played host to one Michael Cera – star of acclaimed television show (and future feature film) Arrested Development, as well as movies Juno, Superbad and Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist.

The Brampton native, with his friends and family, was pretty underwhelming.  He showed up in much-too-short skinnypants, and talked about things such as how he thought Slumdog Millionaire was cheesy, and (at length) how to correctly calculate a tip.

Seeing celebrities up close kind of ruins the magic for me.

For those of you who might say “nothing in life is free,” or “there’s no such thing as a free movie lunch,” here’s something you might be interested in.  Rainbow Cinemas is offering 2 Free Movie Mornings this month:

Kung Fu Panda                            Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who
Saturday, December 13, 2008       Saturday, December 20, 2008

For both movies, doors open at 10:30am and the films start at 11.  Admission is free, on a first-come-first-served basis and is limited to cimema capacity. You can bet your ass there are going to be about a thousand commercials at the beginning, otherwise I have no idea why they would be hosting these events.  Also of note – how ironic is it that KFP is rated PG (not recommended for young children).  Who else would go see this movie??

Rainbow Cinemas has 3 locations in the GTA:
Market Square (80 Front Street East @ Jarvis)
Promenade Mall (1Promenade Circle)
Woodbine Centre (500 Rexdale Boulevard)

Last weekend I was on my way north on the Don Valley Parkway, when I spotted perhaps the funniest personalized license plate I’ve ever – EVER – seen:

The plate says VOYAJR!!  And not only was it accompanied by a legitimate Star Trek symbol (who knew you could even get one of those on your licence plate?), but it was on a PLYMOUTH VOYAGER!

BTW, for all you Trekkies out there, here’s the teaser trailer for J. J. Abrams’ new Star Trek movie.

The Incredibe Torontonian

Hulk 2 . . . er, I mean, The Incredible Hulk hits theatres June 13.  According to its imdb page, “due to the disappointing performance of Hulk (2003), Marvel decided to start the franchise afresh with a totally new creative team and cast.”  What does this have to do with Toronto, you ask??  Well, the movie filmed up here in Hollywood North last fall.

You can clearly see that the big fight scene at the end of the trailer takes place on Yonge Street (note: Zanzibar Strip Club Tavern and the Sam The Record Man neon signs @ 1:46 ).  Also, the brief moment (0:42) where Ed Norton is in the rain on the bridge is totally on Cherry Street in the portlands.  And I was there!
